Terms of Service

Last updated: August 2026

These terms cover your use of Penrise. By creating an account or using the app, you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use Penrise.

What Penrise is

Penrise is a private, end-to-end encrypted daily journal. Entries are encrypted on your device before being stored, using a key derived from your password. Penrise is currently free to use. A paid plan may be introduced in the future; if it is, existing free entries will remain yours to read and export regardless.

Your account and your password

You're responsible for keeping your password and recovery key safe. Because Penrise is built so that we never have access to your encryption key, we cannot recover your entries for you if you lose both your password and your recovery key. This is a direct consequence of how the encryption works, not a limitation we can override on request.

You must be at least 13 years old to use Penrise. You're responsible for all activity that happens under your account.

Acceptable use

Don't use Penrise to store or transmit anything illegal, to attempt to breach or disrupt the service, or to try to access another user's account or data.

Your content

Your journal entries are yours. We don't read them, we don't claim ownership of them, and — because they're encrypted before they reach our servers — we technically can't access their content even if we wanted to. You can export or permanently delete your entries at any time from within the app.

Service availability

Penrise is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis. We don't guarantee the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or available at all times. As a small, independently run project, features, availability, or the service itself may change over time.

No warranty

We've built Penrise's encryption carefully and tested it thoroughly, but Penrise has not undergone an independent third-party security audit. We make no warranty, express or implied, that the service will be completely secure or free of defects. You use Penrise at your own risk.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Penrise and its operator are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the service, including loss of data (for example, from a lost password and recovery key, as described above).

Changes to the service or these terms

We may update these terms or the service itself over time. If we make a material change, we'll update the date at the top of this page. Continuing to use Penrise after a change means you accept the updated terms.

Termination

You can stop using Penrise and delete your account and data at any time from within the app. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms.
